Showcased at this year's Cannes Directors' Fortnight with its sequel screened back to back, Kashyap has brought forth a sprawling, three generation span long tale of the titular Gangs of the coal mining town, where three crime families engage one another for infamy, riches and power supremacy. Alas, no such luck.Ĭo-written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, this film will probably propel the filmmaker into the ranks occupied by the likes of Coppola and Scorsese in crafting Mafia styled epics, filled with the themes of brotherhood, revenge, betrayal, sex and violence.

When I saw how long the movie was I figured it was because it had the usual song-and-dance stuff, and I would just fast forward through that. The small amount of musical interludes is also a negative in a way.

On the plus side, the usual Bollywood nonsense of random song-and- dance scenes is kept to a minimum. A bit (actually, a lot) of editing, and much more focusing on the main plot and the movie could have been interesting. Pretty much just drifts for all those 320 minutes. Incredibly unfocused with pointless detours and sub-plots. However, the execution leaves a lot to be desired.
Based on the story outline, the movie had potential: a gangster movie spanning several decades - quite Godfather or Goodfellas-like. Boring and, at 320 minutes, seemingly interminable to the point of being painful. We see how the feud began, and how it developed. If this was Godfather, this would be twice as long in length. The whole movie feels like a vast long story being crammed into a space that is too small. The story feels a little rushed covering a long timeline. I'm a little confused with some of the family melodrama. In fact, I would preferred his story to be expanded into either part I or a prequel of sorts like in Godfather II. Shahid Khan could be a movie all by himself. I can definitely see the comparison to the Godfather movies. Sardar uses daring, intimidation and his criminal ways to take on the powerful magnate Singh as one of the most feared crime lord. Decades later, Sardar is told of the murder and vows revenge. The son Sardar Khan is rescued and raised alongside his cousin Asghar. He kills Shahid and tries to kill his family. He overhears Shahid's plan to murder him for the mines.
He hires Shahid Khan as muscle to keep the workers in line. After independence, Ramadhir Singh takes over some of lucrative coal mines but they struggle without British managers and money. In 1941 British colonial India, Shahid Khan is robbing trains under the guise of legendary bandit Sultana Daku.
